Porsche 912E ~ 1976-1976

After the original 912 was discontinued in 1969, Porsche relied on the 914 as its entry-level model. However, when that car was discontinued Porsche needed a new car with which to entice less well-heeled buyers.

The solution, at least for the North American market, was to resurrect the 912 essentially a 911 bodyshell with a four-cylinder engine.

The new 911E, as it was dubbed, was based on the G-series 911 and fitted with a 2.0-litre flat-four engine. It was only a stop-gap measure, though, before the all-new front-engined 924 appeared.
